DriveMotion

A car dashboard, a trip recorder and a speed camera warner in one app. Connect an OBD-II adapter for live engine data, or use it on GPS alone. Your trips stay on your phone.

What it does

Live dashboard

Speed, engine RPM, average speed, instant and average consumption, fuel level, coolant temperature and battery voltage — read straight from the car over OBD-II. Without an adapter the dashboard falls back to GPS speed and distance.

Trip recording

Start a trip and the route is recorded in the background, even with the screen off. You get distance, duration, average and maximum speed, rest stops, climb, a driving score and an economy score.

Speed camera warnings

Fixed cameras, control points and average-speed corridors. Inside a corridor the app tracks your running average, so you can see whether you are on course before the exit gantry, not after it.

Works offline

The camera database is bundled inside the app and checked locally against your position. No connection is needed for warnings, and your location is never sent away to get them.

Trip history and playback

Every trip is kept with its map. Play a trip back as an animation, then export it as a share card or a video with your route drawn on a real map.

Fault codes

Read and clear diagnostic trouble codes, with plain-language descriptions looked up in a table shipped inside the app. Nothing about your car is sent anywhere to explain a code.

Your driving data stays yours

DriveMotion has no accounts and no sign-in, and we do not run a server that receives your data. Trips, routes, photos and vehicle data are written to your own device. There is no analytics SDK and no crash-reporting SDK in the app.

The free version shows ads from Google AdMob, which uses your device’s advertising identifier — that, and a short list of other connections, is set out honestly in the policy.

What you need

  • A phone — Android or iOS. GPS features work on their own.
  • An OBD-II adapter, if you want live engine data. DriveMotion connects over Bluetooth Low Energy, over classic Bluetooth on Android, or over Wi-Fi to adapters that expose a TCP port. On iOS only the Bluetooth Low Energy path is available, because that is what iOS permits.
  • A car with an OBD-II port — standard on most cars sold since the early 2000s. Which values your car reports is decided by the car, not by the app; DriveMotion probes what is supported and shows the rest as unavailable.

DriveMotion Pro

The app is free to use. An optional Pro subscription, monthly or yearly, removes ads and unlocks the Pro vehicle models used in trip videos and on the map. It is sold through Google Play and the App Store, and can be cancelled there at any time.

You can also watch a rewarded ad for an hour without ads, without subscribing.
